In many cases, knowing what not to do is much easier than trying to figure out all the right things to do. This is especially true when it comes to home décor. While decorating your home or apartment to reflect your own personal style and look is exciting and fun, there are some design elements that simply don’t work.

Not Considering the Color Palette Carefully
Chances are you have heard of ‘pretty in pink’ but this bedroom space takes the statement to a whole new level.
There is nothing wrong with adding a splash of color, or even creating bold accents with color. Things go terribly awry when there is not enough diversity in the color palate you choose, however. It is important to carefully consider the colors you use for your space. Start with neutrals and then select richer and more vibrant colors that complement one another. This is one of the best ways to create an aesthetically pleasing space that is also comfortable and welcoming.
Patterns and Prints…Oh MY!
So you love flowers? Great! It doesn’t mean you have to have a different flower pattern present on every element in a room! While using prints and patterns in your décor is a great way to add some style and pizazz, there is such a thing as “too much,” as shown in the image here. Try to pick one print or pattern and then build the room around a few elements that feature it. This will showcase the pattern or print you love, without making it overbearing in the process.
Choose Carpeting – Very Carefully!
Carpeting is still an extremely popular flooring choice for homes. However, when you are installing carpet in your space, consider the pattern very carefully. As illustrated in this image, patterns can be quite deceiving. Is it a ramp? Stairs? Not only is this an accident waiting to happen, it is also quite an eye-sore.
There Is Such a Thing as Too Much Family Pride
One of the best ways to show how proud you are of your family is to put up photos in your home. this can get out of hand, however, and even worse is that you may not even realize. Remember, the artwork and décor in your home should consist of only framed photos. If you display too many framed pictures, it will create clutter and take away from the special images that you want to ensure are noticed.
Furniture that Doesn’t Fit the Space
Sure shopping for furniture is fun, but just because a piece looks great in the store (in the professional set up) doesn’t mean it’s going to look amazing once its moves it into your space. Measuring the space in your home or apartment, as well as size of the furniture in question, is one of the best ways to make sure you buy furniture that will be the right scale.
Decorating is fun. Getting it right makes you feel great and will make the time you spend in your home or apartment that much more enjoyable. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that there are a number of mistakes that can occur and knowing what some of the most common ones will prevent you from making them in your own home.
